So remember to come back
Last year, Jessica Stroup was Satan’s daughter on the CW’s canceled Reaper. Now fresh out of Hell, she’s stirring up trouble in the country’s most notorious zip code: 90210. The CW’s reboot of the legendary Aaron Spelling primetime soap was the most hotly anticipated new show of the 2009-2010 TV season, and Stroup’s character was long shrouded in mystery. Was she Kelly and David’s half-sister Erin, or was she the progeny of Donna and David’s series finale union? It turns out she is little Erin, who we last saw as a blonde impish tot who was concerned that ice cream would make her fat. Now answering to the moniker “Silver,” the angry teen acts like Gossip Girl’s bitchy best friend on her virtual burn book, “The Vicious Circle.”
Being on such a high-profile show has as both perks and drawbacks. Critics and viewers have been quick to compare the show to “the original,” and report on its significant second-week ratings drop-off. The female stars have also come under scrutiny for their less-than-curvy physiques. The show may need a bit more time to find its footing, but it’s nice to be back in the halls of West Beverly High. Stroup talked to BlackBook about working in a bubble, the problem with 90210 extremists, and being the female Luke Perry.
What zip code did you grow up in?
Oh my god. I moved around to like nine different schools by 9th grade. The last one I lived in was Charlotte, North Carolina. 28277.
Can you relate to the high school experience that 90210 is depicting?
When I went to Charlotte, I walked in wearing jeans, a pair of shoes, and a sweatshirt. Just normal and comfortable. And the girls there were wearing heels and short skirts and stuff, and it just blew my mind.
As Erin Silver, you’re the tie-in, you’re the spin-off.
I’m the glue that holds everybody together.
From the vague descriptions of your character, she seems savvy.
She’s very blunt in everything she does and everything she says and stuff. If she’s in a catty brawl, you know she’s not going to take it. She doesn’t care about pleasing everybody around her. She wants to please herself and I think that’s highly respectable.
Jessica’s “90210″ co-star Ryan Eggold have have made a comment on all of the articles and rumors about that Jessica and Shenae are too skinny to be on tv and that they have been seen on set not eating anything. I think he gave us a really good answer to all of that and I am glad to know that it’s not true or atleast I hope it’s true what Ryan says.
90210′s Ryan Eggold stopped to squash the rumors about Shenae Grimes and Jessica Stroup being too skinny. “I see them eating cheeseburgers all day, every day.”
What do you think? Do you think that Jessica and Shenae are to skinny to be on tv, are they setting a bad example. Here’s an article from EW.com.
You’d think it would take something big to steal our attention from the highly anticipated reunion of Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty on the new 90210. Actually, it was something small–too small. Almost without exception, the young actresses on The CW’s spin-off are alarmingly thin, with arms that seem thickest at the wrists, and legs that look, well, like arms. As we watched Kansas transplant Annie Wilson (Shenae Grimes, pictured, left) graze on a side salad as her lunch entrée, one question lingered: Are we the only ones overreacting to these skinny minnies? The answer, as it turns out, is no.
“Everyone says television adds five or ten pounds, so if you’re watching and someone looks like they haven’t eaten in forever, what must they look like in person?” asks a Hollywood insider who works with young actresses on popular series (nearly everyone asked about this subject preferred to remain anonymous). “Why doesn’t someone on set or a producer or a studio head say, ‘This is not okay’?” According to a source close to the show, the network has. Calls went out to representatives of the show’s stars (Grimes, Jessica Stroup, pictured right, and AnnaLynne McCord) suggesting they address the weight issue with the ladies. McCord’s publicist Gary Mantoosh denies receiving such notice, and insists that his client chows down on “whatever she wants,” including hamburgers. But one report estimates that none of the stars weighs more than 110 pounds, and 90210 insiders quietly admit that they know there’s a problem.
Of course, no one is pointing accusatory fingers at three actresses barely out of their teens. One casting agent who works frequently with The CW turns a critical eye on the network itself. “I know in discussions at ABC and CBS that ‘too skinny’ is no good. They talk about it as a minus point,” says the agent. “But at The CW it’s a different story. They’re trying to pull in the Gossip Girl audience and that’s the image: hyper-skinny models.” (The network declined to comment for this article.) Still, The CW hardly stands alone in holding Hollywood actresses to an impossible standard when it comes to weight: Be thin, really really thin–but not too thin! Which leaves actresses with, oh, roughly eight ounces of wiggle room.
Seven “90210″ stills have been added to the gallery, thanks to my good friend Qua for sending me them Can’t wait for the new episode on tuseday. I have also added four behind the scene images of Jessica and the rest of the cast of “90210″ at the shoot for USA Today. Here are some previews and links.
