The CW announced the fall renewals of five hit series on Tues. (April 26) — “Gossip Girl,” “90210,” “Supernatural” and “The Vampire Diaries,” which air locally on WGN 9 Chicago. The network also greenlit the first-ever All Stars Cycle of “America’s Next Top Model,” featuring models from past seasons.
Missing from the list are long-running drama “One Tree Hill” and first year series “Hellcats” and “Nikita.” The majority of the “OTH” cast have signed on for another season, yet it still remains on the bubble as it has almost every season.
The pickups for the rest of the returning series should come as no surprise. “The Vampire Diaries” remains The CW’s most-watched series with 4 million viewers, while Season 6 of “Supernatural” is up 60% in total viewers on Friday nights, paired with departing “Smallville.”
Monday night staple “Gossip Girl” ranks as the second highest-rated series among the network’s target audience of women 18-34. While “90210″ delivers modest ratings, it has the largest increase in viewers from DVR playback.
Meanwhile, “ANTM” will return with two new cycles, including the All Stars edition in the fall, which will bring back several models who became breakout characters and had the most memorable stories from past seasons. Details about the cast, judges and prizes will be announced at a later date.
All five series will return next fall. The CW will unveil its official fall schedule in May during the annual upfront presentations to advertisers.
